It was a true football thriller at the Schanzl Stadium: Despite cool temperatures and rain, around 500 spectators came to cheer on the Amberg Mad Bulldogs against the Franken Knights. And they were not disappointed – at least in terms of excitement and effort. In the end, however, the Bulldogs narrowly lost 16-21.
The game started promisingly: Amberg's first drive didn't result in a touchdown, but offensive coordinator Heiko Müller opted for a field goal early on – and it landed. The DAWGS took a 3-0 lead. But the visitors' response wasn't long in coming: a touchdown and an extra point for Rothenburg.
As the game progressed, the Bulldogs' luck wasn't exactly on their side. They repeatedly lacked the final precision in their passing, and the rain-soaked ball made things difficult for the receivers. The ball slipped through their hands time and again – frustrating, because quarterback Matthew O'Meara's throws were actually well-placed.
The visitors' defense also proved solid – as did their offense: Both teams scored in the second quarter, with the Knights adding a successful two-point conversion. The score was 9:15 at halftime – and the weather turned up its worst with heavy rain.

After the break, at least the weather calmed down. On the field, however, things remained heated: numerous penalties, much discussion on the sideline, but no points in the third quarter. It wasn't until the final quarter that the Bulldogs found their way back into the end zone – a touchdown plus an extra point, which gave them a narrow 16-15 lead.
But even that wasn't enough. With three minutes left, the Knights struck again – a touchdown, this time without an extra point. 16:21. Now it was all or nothing. The Bulldogs regained possession and worked their way down the field with great fight and patience – until a pass was intercepted. Interception, possession for Rothenburg – and with that, the game was practically decided.
Conclusion: A narrow defeat that hurts – because more could have been achieved. But also a game from which we can learn.
